Innovative Bat Mitigation Services for the Wind Industry

Balancing Bat Protection with Wind Energy Production

Automated Bioacoustics Ltd provides cutting-edge environmental services to the wind energy industry. We use artificial learning and automated bioacoustic recordings to help manage wind turbines’ impacts on protected bat species, while also reducing impacts on the operator's bottom line.

The Wildlife Acoustics
SMART System

We specialise in working with the SMART System, and can guide you through installation, maintenance, monitoring and curtailment.

Acoustically Triggered Curtailment

Curtail turbines when you know bats are present, not when they might be present. Better for bats and better for operators.

Analysis, Monitoring and Reporting

With remote access to the raw data we can cost efficiently monitor bats at nacelle height, wherever you are, and provide comprehensive reporting.

 The SMART System

We use a system of hardware and software called the SMART System, manufactured by Wildlife Acoustics Inc. Wildlife Acoustics are the world’s largest bat detector manufacturer.

Automated Bioacoustics work closely with Wildlife Acoustics and have been testing and using the SMART System since its inception in 2022.

Automated Bioacoustics have negotiated an agreement with Wildlife Acoustics that allows us to provide technical services to Wildlife Acoustics clients who purchase a SMART System.

Our services include:

  • creating, testing and monitoring SMART alarms for acoustically triggred curtailment
  • analysis of bat calls to species and assessing bat activity
  • reporting
  • maintenance contracts
  • staff training

Contact us now to discuss how the SMART System can effectively help you fulfil your obligations to protect bats while limiting the impact on your profitability.

Acoustically Triggered Curtailment

Heading

This video demonstrates Acoustically Triggered Curtailment in action! In the video, watch out for the first bat flying under the nacelle. Once the SMART System detects the bat it sends a signal to the SCADA to feather the blades (you can hear that change as it happens). Within a few seconds the turbine is slowing to a stop. Several bats fly safely in an out of shot after the turbine has stopped. The turbine will remain feathered until the system is sure that no bats remain in the area, and then will signal to the SCADA that it is safe to resume turning the blades.

Monitoring and Reporting

Whether you need a pre-installation survey, or have a turbine with known rates of mortlity, we can help you effectively understand levels of bat activity at your site, and clearly and concisely communicate levels of risk to local authorities and other stakeholders.

Our expert staff have science and ecology backgrounds, with especial expertise in bats and analysing bat sounds. Contact us to find out how we can help you protect bats and protect your profit.

Learn more about us

Automated Bioacoustics was conceived by Fran Tattersall and Paul Howden-Leach who, under separate businesses, have provided consultancy services to Wildlife Acoustics for many years. Between us we also have experience in ecological consultancy, academic research and renewable energy. We bring together a passion for bat conservation with an understanding of the importance of wind energy production to ensuring a secure furture for us all.
